The Third Place Theory
Both Haven and FBR focus on making their venues the best possible third place.
Ray Oldenburg’s Third Place Theory centers on the idea that our lives can be divided into three primary realms: Your first place is your home. Your second place is your work. Your third place is somewhere you can connect with others, share your thoughts and dreams, and have fun. A third place can be a bookstore, a teahouse, a pub, a gym, a cafe, or so on.
In a time when work and home life are increasingly intertwined, and with loneliness at all-time high, third places can help restore balance by providing a dedicated space for relaxation, socialization and curiosity.
A third place capable of being an antidote to isolation and exclusion - needs to meet the following criteria outlined in Oldenburg’s book The Great Good Place:
- Neutral ground: People are there simply because they want to. There are no financial, political, or legal ties and they are free to come and go as they please.
- Leveler (a leveling place): FBR's underlying theme of older technologies gives patrons a common thing to bond over that no one really understands, putting everyone on the same playing ground of vulnerability.
- Conversation/Anti-productivity: We made furniture that discourages working (the cafe is a horrible workstation- this was a conscious decision). The store design is playful and encourages conversation and curiosity.
- The regulars: Third places harbor a number of regulars that help give the space its tone, and help set the mood and characteristics of the area.
Oldenburg defines a few more characteristics in his work, we encourage you guys to go explore them - and use them as criteria when looking for a good third place in your own life. Too often we don't realize we lack a space in our lives we can do nothing - where we don't have a active task, where nothing is expected is from us. A place where all we do is talk, connect and explore.
See you soon,
